Consider this a dare for those in enduring partnerships who appreciate the horror genre: Get comfortable with your loved one and stream Together. This independent film success of 2025 has now made its online premiere on Hulu. On the surface, it may seem like conventional physical horror, but beneath Together lies a deep examination about our choices in loving our partners.
An Introductory Film Investigating The Nuances of Love
Together is the debut feature-length film for filmmaker Michael Shanks. It features actors Alison Brie and Dave Franco as Millie and Tim, a pair who are not married that have stayed together for ten years. United in marriage in real life in 2017, Franco and Brie bring a special spark to their characters, expertly portraying both the joys and frustrations of a long-term relationship.
The narrative commences when the couple transition from the metropolis to the rural area for her career. A commonly used narrative setup, of course, but that’s largely where the cliches conclude. Together evolves into as much a psychological exploration of the pair’s relationship as it is a film about physical terror.
A Paranormal Spark
While trekking near their new home, a violent storm occurs, and the two tumble into an underground cave. After being trapped overnight there and eventually escaping, a strange force takes hold of the pair. This force induces a supernatural closeness between them that goes far beyond emotional intimacy.
The whole movie is a methodically building of scares, interspersing elements of hallucinatory nightmares, disturbing (but not excessively graphic) body horror, and genuinely funny interactions (sometimes amidst something disturbing). Michael Shanks orchestrates these parts seamlessly and presents them in a gradually swelling aura of dread.
Complex Characterizations
A great deal of Together is solely the two lead actors, and they masterfully render numerous complexities to the partnership at the film's core. Millie's sense of self and feeling of intimacy is waning due to a emotional and physical gap. Her unspoken irritation of Tim for his reluctance to focus on anything other than his struggling artistic pursuits inexorably rises.
Tim, on the other hand experiences isolation and cut off by Millie, who’s the cause they’ve relocated rural and distant from his social circle. He fears the notion of completely losing his personal autonomy in another person. This fear is intensified by the fact he lacks a driver's license and is dependent on Millie for mobility.
The film's most intelligent aspect in Together never makes Tim or Millie the clear bad guy.
Both characters grapple with the kind of problems that arise in most partnerships a decade in. Fundamentally, they have affection for one another. They still laugh together, comfort one another, and are vulnerable at times. But beneath it all, there’s an unavoidable current of uncertainty about their bond.
Thematic Depth
While the supernatural forces in Together represent these anxieties of codependency and giving oneself over to a partner, the allegory does not come across as clumsy or heavy-handed. Instead, these visceral horror elements present a brilliant analogue to the interpersonal storytelling. Both the frights and the fights work together symbiotically.
A Divisive Ending
Together’s conclusion, which is best experienced firsthand, has sparked debate on the film’s ultimate message about enmeshed dynamics. It has been said that those not in relationships have seen the movie as a compelling reason for staying single. Conversely, a few pairs experiencing tension found that the film ultimately assisted them resolve their issues.
If you are alone or with a partner, your own response could act as a revealing measure of how you think about commitment. Will the finale inspire anxiety and horror, or a uplifting feeling of optimism? Will you recognize your own traits in one of the characters and scream at your TV, or simply glance toward your other half and utter, “I understand that choice”?
Whatever the case may be, Together is an exploration you can experience at this very moment.
Together is streaming on Hulu at present.
