One of the original creators behind the well-known ice cream brand Ben and Jerry's has stated that corporate owner the multinational conglomerate stopped the introduction of an innovative Palestine-themed frozen dessert product.

Ben Cohen, that co-founded the business alongside his partner, revealed that he plans to independently develop the controversial product as part of a personal series highlighting issues Ben & Jerry's was barred from addressing publicly.

Ongoing Conflict Between Creators versus Corporate Owner

The recent announcement deepens the continuing tension between the internationally recognized dessert company and Unilever, the UK-based consumer goods giant that acquired Ben & Jerry's since 2000.

The co-founders have asserted how Unilever and their ice cream division the Magnum brand unlawfully blocked Ben & Jerry's from "honouring its social mission".

The Fruit Sorbet as a Symbol for Support

Mr. Cohen announced via an Instagram video how he's developing a new watermelon-based frozen dessert, requesting consumer ideas for naming options and potential ingredients.

“I'm accomplishing what they couldn't,” the founder commented in a cooking set. “I'm creating a watermelon-flavored ice cream that calls for lasting ceasefire for Palestinians and calls for repairing the damage that was done there.”

This particular fruit has emerged as an emblem of solidarity with Palestinians due to its colors, that closely resemble the colors in Palestine's national banner – the distinctive four-color pattern.

Historical Social Engagement plus Recent Changes

In 2021, the ice cream company ceased sales of their merchandise in territories under Israeli control, resulting in the parent company transferring the Israeli operation to an Israeli distributor, thus allowing ongoing distribution in disputed territories.

The new dessert series is being created through Ben's Best, the socially conscious dessert company that was first created in 2016 for endorsing ex- US presidential candidate Senator Sanders via the product "Bernie's Back".

Management Changes plus Future Intentions

The founder revealed how he will create additional ice cream flavors that address issues which the company was prevented from speaking about openly due to corporate restrictions.

This development follows co-founder Jerry Greenfield resigned his position at Ben & Jerry's recently, following decades with the organization, citing concerns that the company's autonomy was undermined after corporate moves to restrict its social activism.

At that time, Mr. Cohen commented that "Jerry has strong compassion and the ongoing dispute with Unilever was deeply distressing him."

“My conscience compels me to continue to work within the organization to advocate for corporate autonomy ensuring that the company can achieve the social mission, the principles that it was founded on and has maintained for decades," he told media outlets.
