Slot Maintains He Is Secure and Retains Liverpool's Backing After PSV Eindhoven Defeat
Arne Slot acknowledged that it's expected for doubts to be asked about his position following a further heavy defeat versus PSV Eindhoven.
Liverpool endured their ninth defeat in 12 games, marking the team's poorest streak since being demoted in the 1953-54 season.
They were outplayed by the Dutch league title holders on a difficult night at their home ground.
“I feel secure, I am OK, I've received significant backing from above,” the coach stated.
“It's important to turn it around and secure a win of course but when you're in a managerial role and underperforming then it's expected that people question you.”
He noted, “I accept my role. This isn't the first time I’ve been in a difficult position but it's necessary that we turned it around.”
Talks with The Board
When asked to expand on his discussions with the club's leadership, the head coach revealed:
“There's regular dialogue. They are helpful to the team and to me and we have those conversations but they don’t call me constantly of the day to say they trust me.”
He further stated, “Through standard exchanges I feel the trust. But I've not talked to them after this match yet so we'll see.”
Persistent Problems and Squad Reaction
The manager highlighted known weaknesses from his squad in their European defeat, specifically wasted chances and leaking goals.
Meanwhile, player Curtis Jones was more direct in his view of the team's situation.
“I don’t have the solutions. Truthfully, I do not. I’m saying that to everyone,” the midfielder said.
“It is not good enough. I don't need to wait to think about it. I'm beyond being angry inside. I've reached the stage now where I just don’t have the phrases.”
He added, “It's difficult because I play for the team I support. I support them, and I’ve seen this club since I was young.”
“In a long, long time, I haven’t experienced a Reds side enduring a phase like this with results this poor.”
He concluded, “However we continue to wear that badge on our chest. And until it is removed, we'll continue to battle.”
“We will attempt to bring this squad return to its rightful place, prove again the values of this club and why people call it the greatest side in the planet.”
“But right now, things are bad and we have to turn it around.”
