An extensive manufacturing complex situated in the suburbs of Jakarta is dealing with nuclear pollution following a government team found presence of the hazardous element Caesium-137 at 22 production plants inside the site, which includes companies shipping chilled seafood.

Investigation and Detection of Pollution

The country's authorities initiated an inquiry after the US Food and Drug Administration identified Caesium-137, a nuclear substance, in a consignment of frozen coated shrimp exported by an Indonesian firm.

Officials released an warning advising distributors and sellers to discard the goods and avoid selling it, although the found level was far below the agency's action threshold. They noted that the quantity of Caesium-137 they had found would not pose an immediate risk to the public.

The authority stated: “The main health effect of worry after longer term, repeated small amount contact (for example through consumption of contaminated food or water over a period) is an elevated risk of the disease, caused by damage to DNA within living cells.”

Extensive Contamination and Health Examinations

Radioactivity tests showed at least 22 factories in the manufacturing area were affected. The Indonesian team did not identify the 21 additional production sites, but said they would promptly undergo cleanup processes conducted by Indonesia's nuclear agency.

The environment minister declared that people living in highly polluted zones would be moved until the location was decontaminated, adding that the safety of the residents was the “main concern”.

Medical officials additionally conducted checks on local workers and residents located near the manufacturing estate, finding nine individuals who tested positive for contact to Caesium-137. They were referred to a medical facility before being cleared to return home.
