NYC's next chief executive, Zohran Mamdani, has decided to live in the historic Gracie Mansion, leaving behind the rent-stabilised apartment that was a central issue during his campaign.

A Traditional Abode

Constructed in 1799, Gracie Mansion has served as the primary dwelling for the majority of New York City mayors from the World War II era.

But, Mamdani, for whom rent control is a core platform, did not confirm he would live there right away after his triumph in November.

"My choice came down to our family's safety and the imperative to directing all of my focus on implementing the platform on affordability New Yorkers supported," the Mayor-Elect declared on Monday.

Thanking a Neighborhood

His home was in Astoria, Queens, a community known for its vibrant immigrant communities and international dining.

"To Astoria: many thanks for exemplifying what is great about New York City," Mamdani's statement said.

"Even though I'm moving there, the community will continue to reside a part of me and the work I do," he affirmed.

Campaign Controversy

During his race for mayor, Mamdani tied his core platform – halting rent increases – to his circumstances as a tenant.

But his critics, mainly former New York Governor Andrew Cuomo, attacked Mamdani for living in the apartment although he is from a prominent family.

A House Not Always Used

Some mayors have opted to reside at Gracie Mansion.

Michael Bloomberg, the billionaire entrepreneur, kept his residence in his own townhouse on Manhattan's Upper East Side throughout his tenure, which concluded in 2012.

Instead, Bloomberg said he believed it should be a venue for official events, and advocated for a major refurbishment of the aging mansion.

A Vastly Different Setting

Upon taking up residence at Gracie Mansion near his inauguration on 1 January, he will experience surroundings very different than his modest Astoria digs.

Featuring pale yellow exterior, green shutters, and bright white balustrades, Gracie Mansion is a wedding cake of a house with views of the East River.

Inside, the first floor of the historically styled mansion is furnished in the spirit of the home's historical period.

The property, which reportedly has five bedrooms, also boasts enhanced security to secure the mayor and his family.

Ghostly Tales

Some residents have suggested that Gracie Mansion also has supernatural lodgers.

Chirlane McCray, the spouse of former mayor Bill De Blasio, once said that doors occasionally opened and closing inexplicably, and the floorboards made strange noises.

Outgoing Mayor Eric Adams was more certain. "No matter what anyone says," he declared in 2022. "There are ghosts in there, man."

A Critical Policy Issue

His former home is rent-stabilized, a policy where the city imposes caps on how much property owners can hike the monthly cost each year.

New Yorkers view rent-stabilized housing as essential protections as the housing expenses exceeds the means of many residents.

It was reported Mamdani his rent was $2,300 each month for his apartment.

Per figures from the real estate platform Zillow, the median rent for a single-bedroom unit in New York City is $3,500 a month.
