New Trump Doctrine Identifies Europe's Core Issue: An Alleged Shortfall of Racism?

During his initial presidency, analysts frequently advised that the former president's statements should be interpreted earnestly instead of literally. Yet, real-world experience indicate that that formula could have got it backwards.

An emergent U.S. National Security Strategy alongside multiple comments from administration officials, Trump proxies, and Trump himself have precipitated what could be one of the most severe crises for transatlantic unity, the doctrine that has sustained stability and freedom in Europe since 1945.

From Financial Contributions to Civilizational Fear

Although the general thrust of this race-baiting is not new, its meaning for European security are essential to grasp.

For Trump and his Maga acolytes—including tech magnate Elon Musk, who has called for the dissolution of the European Union—all politics is fundamentally a deal. However, whereas the previous argument was about financial fairness, the new claim is that a declining Europe is fundamentally unworthy because of its embrace of diversity.

A Self-Fulfilling Prophecy

During the conversation, Trump himself connects these dots in a form of rhetorical loop. He acknowledges that the Kremlin desires a divided Europe. Trump then declares Europe is weak, and in exposing the rifts between the transatlantic alliance, he objectively helps Putin by actively undermining European cohesion—all while denying any responsibility.

All of this is playing out at perhaps the most critical juncture for Europe in decades, amid a devastating war in Ukraine and rising provocations across the continent.

As European nations cleaves ever tighter to Kyiv facing persistent threats of U.S. withdrawal, the danger is that Trump has constructed a rationale for ignoring his allies.

Reactions from Allies

These developments requires a robust reaction from European leadership. Although certain leaders, such as Germany's leader, have been blunt in their rebuttals, including British officials—have continued with a policy of seeking to placate the White House.

Recently, a Downing Street spokesperson refused to criticize Trump's comments about Europe or his renewed attack on the mayor of London.

The spokesperson stated, "The Prime Minister has a productive partnership with the American leader and a strong relationship with the London mayor, and is committed to cooperating with each to achieve stronger results for the British public."

The stark reality is that the president intends what he says and repeats them repeatedly. It is past time to abandon the pretense that things are different.
