The beloved police drama AC-12 will make a comeback for its seventh season, confirmed by the broadcaster.

An upcoming six-episode season written by Jed Mercurio starts production in Northern Ireland this spring, according to the production team.

The actress expressed excitement about the return, stating she was "so excited" about the show's renewal. Adrian Dunbar remarked, "How wonderful it is to know that the main trio will be reuniting together soon."

The previous series wrapped up in 2021 with a final episode that drew in over 17 million viewers. Rumors about a new season have been circulating ever since, but official word only came recently.

New Challenges for AC-12

The seventh season will open with AC-12 having been disbanded and rebranded as the Inspectorate of Police Standards, as revealed by the announcement.

Martin Compston's character, Kate Fleming, and Ted Hastings remain working to combat corruption within the police force.

Their work "faces unprecedented challenges", and in this climate, these officers are assigned their "most sensitive case so far."

Fresh Face and Complex Case

A new character, DI Dominic Gough, described as a charismatic officer celebrated for busts of criminal networks, faces allegations of misusing his authority to act as a offender.

However, his case might serve as a intentional diversion from a bigger threat still active in the shadows, plot details hinted.

Speaking about the renewal, the creator said: "Everyone involved are deeply thankful to the dedicated viewers."

"It's an honor to have had so many followers watch the developments of AC-12 over multiple series and we are thrilled to be coming back for a new season."

He added: "Misconduct in this country is supposed to have ended while the series was off air, so I've been forced to use my creativity."

Cast Reactions

The Scottish actor described being part of the series as "the role of a career".

"Not only the show's success but the colleagues I've worked with I now call dear friends."

"I can't wait to wear the uniform again and reunite with everyone," he added.

The Nottingham-born actress remarked: "Obviously I'm so excited Line of Duty is back! Can't wait to work with Jed, Compston and Adrian again. The city, we'll see you soon!"

Adrian Dunbar commented: "As we count down the AC-12 return, how exciting it is to know that the central trio will be back filming next year."

"Delighted with the news and looking forward to those mercurial plot developments."
