Israelis have assembled around the country to remember two years since the Hamas-initiated assault on 7 October 2023, as negotiations advanced in the neighboring country over an end to the war in the Gaza Strip.

The attack resulted in over 1,200 people dead and 251 others abducted away to Gaza as hostages. It was the most most fatal day for Jewish people since the Second World War.

Israel responded by beginning a defensive operation in Gaza which has claimed more than 67,000 people, as reported by the region's Hamas-administered health ministry. Its statistics are regarded as accurate by the UN and other world agencies.

"The violent adversaries have struck forcefully, but they have not overcome us," the prime minister added on that day.

He also promised to "realize all the aims of the war: the return of all the abducted, the destruction of the Hamas administration and the guarantee that Gaza will never again present a threat to Israel".

Memorial Gatherings Across Israel

The national leadership delayed official remembrance events until mid-October - after the conclusion of the Jewish High Holiday season - but events still took place across the country on Tuesday.

A remembrance service for the loved ones of Israelis killed in the Hamas assault was organized in the coastal city. Put together by the families themselves, it was broadcast across Israeli TV networks.

Hours earlier, a minute's silence was held across the country.

Negotiation Talks in Egypt

Meanwhile, the conflicting parties' negotiating teams gathered in the North African tourist destination of the negotiation venue for a continuing round of mediated discussions to examine the conditions of the agreement.

A prominent delegate involved in the talks indicated that an late session of indirect talks began at evening in Egypt.

The representative explained the earlier meeting concluded without significant progress, because of conflicting views over the proposed Israeli retreat arrangements from Gaza and over guarantees Hamas seeks to make certain Israel does not restart hostilities after the opening period of the agreement.

He commented that the talks are "difficult and have not yet deliver any real breakthrough," but noted that facilitators are working hard to reduce the differences between the two sides.

Essential Issues in Discussions

  • A permanent truce
  • The trade of the captives still held by Hamas for Palestinian prisoners from Gaza
  • The withdrawal of military personnel from Gaza
  • Arrangements for humanitarian aid provision
  • Future governance of the area

Civilian Sentiment

In Tel Aviv's Hostages Square that day, young a woman - whose family member lived through the assault on the gathering, where hundreds were killed and numerous more were captured by Hamas fighters - explained: "Nowhere seems like home now and until each abducted person return no one will feel safe."

"After we see everyone home once more, we can relax once more. Then we can start to rebuild," she continued.

Near the leader's home in the capital, people congregated to express their solidarity for the families of the captives. Israel reports forty-eight remain in confinement in Gaza, twenty of whom are considered to be living.

Activist Atalia Regev stated: "It's necessary do whatever arrangement necessary for the abducted to be released. But we truly desire promises that we will be protected."

Research now regularly indicate that around the majority of the population desire the hostilities to conclude in as payment for the release of the hostages.

Palestinian Situation

At the site of the music event, those paying respects came together to pay their respects.

From the site, the noise of aerial bombardments and shelling could be detected just a short distance away in Gaza, where local people indicated the intense Israeli shelling persisted.

In the main city, air and artillery strikes were documented in the early hours of that day in the west side neighborhood, sector and Nasr areas and in the east side area of Sheikh Radwan, as well the camp to the north-west.

"As the night comes, the dread arrives with it," relocated Gaza City resident Emaan al-Wahidi, whose young son was lost his life by an Israeli bombing earlier, explained.

"Me and my three children are afraid of the air strikes. All the night we are resting together, holding each other, notably my little child who places his face on me throughout the night."

"Constantly we check the updates to see what happened. And I'm concerned that this halt will not be achieved and that the fighting will come back to us."

Medical Crisis

The medical facility in Gaza City said it had accepted the corpses of several people by the afternoon, including three who died in an Israeli attack in the southern area.

A different healthcare center in the southern city of the city reported two more dead people had been brought there. A person was killed by Israeli soldiers while attempting to get assistance to the southern area, health workers reported.

Gaza's health ministry reported twenty-five of the {territ
