Information Available About the Victims of the Bondi Shooting

No fewer than 16 people were killed and more than 40 sustained injuries when gunmen fired on a Hanukkah event at Bondi Beach, an attack Australian authorities are describing as a act of terrorism.

According to the most recent information, officials have announced the number of fatalities stands at 16, encompassing one of the suspected attackers. Moreover, 42 people with injuries were taken to hospital.

The deceased are yet to be publicly named, but authorities state their ages span from 10 and 87 years of age.

Listed are the individuals who have been identified so far.

Eli Schlanger

London-born rabbi Eli Schlanger, 41, was the first to be publicly identified.

Known as a father-of-five, he served as the associate rabbi at Chabad of Bondi. Family members and friends spoke of him as “vivacious, energetic, full of life and a very kind and sociable person who was dedicated to assisting others”.

“How is it possible that a joyful rabbi who went to a beach to share joy and positivity, to make the world a better place, meet his end in this way?” a family member remarked.

Schlanger and his wife celebrated the birth of their newest son in October.

Alexander Kleytman

Alexander Kleytman was also confirmed among the deceased, according to his wife.

She told the events leading up to the shooting, stating they had been standing together when the shooting erupted. “He pushed his body up because he wanted to stay near me,” she stated.

The pair were both Holocaust survivors, having experienced unspeakable terror in their youth. They had subsequently immigrated to Australia from Ukraine.

Dan Elkayam

French authorities have confirmed that French national Dan Elkayam is among the dead.

Publicly, the Foreign Minister expressed that France stood with his family, the Jewish community, and the Australian people.

“This cowardly attack is a new, tragic manifestation of a disgusting rise of hatred against Jews that we must combat,” the statement read.

One Child

A young girl, aged 10 who was rushed to the a children's hospital has been confirmed among the fatalities, according to police reports.

One Israeli Citizen

A national of Israel was among those killed in the incident, as per multiple sources referencing the Israeli government.

Those Injured

From the 42 people transported to hospital, many remain receiving treatment, with several in serious condition. The injured include two officers who responded to the attack.

A wounded man is a bystander who rushed to the scene to tackle one of the gunmen. Hailed as a local hero, he sustained gunshot wounds but is in stable condition in hospital.

Arsen Ostrovsky

One of those wounded is Arsen Ostrovsky, a public affairs professional. It has been reported he was hurt and underwent treatment in hospital.

He wrote, he recounted the incident as an “utter carnage,” but also noted the response of those who rushed to help. He stated he felt it was a “stroke of luck” he was alive.

Evan Zlatkis

Evan Zlatkis, a community director, was another casualty in the shooting. He said he listened to “a large number” of shots.

“I thought it was something less lethal, but it penetrated my own skin and into my leg,” he stated. “I sustained a gunshot wound. They bandaged me up. I’m ok.”
