We are analyzing images and video shared this morning that purport to show the aftermath of a reported car bomb explosion that Russian officials state fatally injured a senior soldier in Moscow.
Officials in Russia confirmed that Lieutenant General Fanil Sarvarov was in the car that exploded and that he later died of his wounds. A probe is under way.
The initial step to verify the site of where the images originated relied on social media reports indicating the explosion happened on Yasenevaya Ulitsa in the southern part of the Russian capital.
We used panoramic mapping services on digital map platforms and the Russian search engine Yandex Maps to match the distinctive yellow hue of a adjacent apartment building seen in the video.
Identifying other buildings, streetlights and the road configuration verified where the pictures were taken.
Additionally, we verified that the videos were new and that the visuals had not been digital alteration.
