England's Assistant Coach Explains His Vision: For England, the Jersey Must Be a Cape, Not Protective Gear.

In the past, Anthony Barry was playing in League Two. Currently, his attention is fixed supporting Thomas Tuchel secure World Cup glory in 2026. The road from athlete to trainer started as an unpaid coach with the youth team. He recalls, “Nights, a small field, tasked with 11 vs 11 … poor equipment, limited resources,” and it captivated him. He had found his calling.

Staggering Ascent

The coach's journey is incredible. Commencing with his first major job, he built a reputation through unique exercises and strong interpersonal abilities. His club career included top European clubs, while also serving in international positions with the Republic of Ireland, Belgium, and Portugal. He has worked with stars like world-class talents. Today, as part of Team England, he's fully immersed, the top in his words.

“All begins with a vision … Yet I'm convinced that passion overcomes challenges. You dream big then you break it down: ‘How can we achieve it, each day, each phase?’ We dream about winning the World Cup. However, vision doesn't suffice. It's essential to develop a structured plan so we can to have the best chance.”

Obsession with Details

Obsession, focusing on tiny aspects, characterizes his journey. Putting in long hours under the sun—sometimes the moon, too, he and Tuchel push hard at comfort zones. Their methods feature mental assessments, a plan for hot conditions ahead of the tournament in North America, and creating a unified squad. The coach highlights the national team spirit and avoids language including "pause".

“You’re not coming here for a holiday or a rest,” he explains. “We had to build something where players are eager to join and where they're challenged that returning to club duty feels easier.”

Driven Leaders

The assistant coach says and the head coach as “very greedy”. “Our goal is to master each element of play,” he states. “We want to conquer the entire field and that's our focus many of our days on. Our responsibility to not only anticipate of changes but to beat them and create our own ones. It’s a constant process focused on finding solutions. And it’s to make the complex clear.

“We have 50 days with the players before the World Cup finals. We need to execute a sophisticated style that gives us a tactical advantage and we must clarify it in our 50 days with them. It's about moving it from concept to details to know-how to performance.

“To develop a process for effective use in that window, it's crucial to employ the entire 500 days we'll have after our appointment. When the squad is away, we have to build relationships with them. We have to spend time communicating regularly, we have to see them in stadiums, understand them, connect with them. If we just use the 50 days, we have no chance.”

Upcoming Matches

He is getting ready on the last two in the qualifying campaign – against Serbia at Wembley and in Albania. The team has secured a spot in the tournament with six wins out of six with perfect defensive records. However, they won't relax; instead. This period to reinforce the team’s identity, to maintain progress.

“The manager and I agree that the football philosophy must reflect all the positives from the top division,” Barry explains. “The fitness, the flexibility, the robustness, the integrity. The Three Lions kit should be harder than ever to get yet easy to carry. It must resemble a cloak instead of heavy armour.

“To ensure it's effortless, it's crucial to offer an approach that enables them to operate like they do every week, that resonates with them and lets them release restrictions. They should overthink less and increase execution.

“You can gain psychological edges available to trainers in the first and final thirds – building from the defense, closing down early. But in the middle area in that part of the ground, it seems football is static, notably in domestic leagues. Everybody has so much information currently. They know how to set up – structured defenses. We are really trying to speed up play through midfield.”

Drive for Growth

The coach's thirst to get better is relentless. While training for his pro license, he felt anxious over the speaking requirement, especially as his class contained luminaries including former players. For self-improvement, he sought out difficult settings he could find to practise giving them. One was HMP Walton locally, and he trained detainees for a training session.

Barry graduated in 2020 at the top of the class, and his dissertation – The Undervalued Set Piece, where he studied 16,154 throw-ins – was published. Lampard was among those won over and he brought Barry on to his staff at Chelsea. When Lampard was sacked, it spoke volumes that the team dismissed nearly all assistants but not Barry.

Lampard’s successor at Chelsea took over, and, four months later, they claimed the Champions League. When Tuchel was dismissed, Barry stayed on with Potter. However, when Tuchel returned with Bayern, he got Barry out from Chelsea and back alongside him. English football's governing body see them as a double act like previous management pairs.
