England to Begin UEFA Euro 2028 Quest at Manchester City’s Etihad Stadium
The England national team will commence their Euro 2028 campaign at the the home of Manchester City, assuming they achieve the relatively straightforward qualification for a competition taking place in the majority of the UK and the Republic of Ireland.
City’s stadium has not hosted an England men’s fixture since eight years ago, when the visitors were overcome 2-1 in a warm-up game, but is expected to host the England side for their opening fixture on Saturday 10 June 2028.
England are planned to play their last two group stage games at Wembley, but, should they win the preliminary round, their last-16 tie would be held at the Newcastle stadium. Finishing second would mean commencing the knockouts at Everton’s ground.
Tournament Opening and Demonstration
The championship was launched at an event in central London on the previous evening. Key representatives from Uefa and the host FAs were barracked as they approached the venue by around fifty activists, who urged Israel to be removed from the sport because of the Gaza crisis.
Banners were held up with phrases stating “Show Israel the red card” and “You are complicit”, while protesters called out: “Kick Israel out.”
Championship Fixture List
The first match of the tournament will be staged at the Cardiff’s stadium in Cardiff, on a Friday in June 2028, a fixture that will feature Wales if they make it.
Wembley will host both semi-finals and the final, which will be played on July 9, 2028 with a commencement at late afternoon.
It is expected that an afternoon start, which will also be used for UEFA Champions League finals from next season, will attract households and help engage a wider spectrum of fans.
Host Nations
The Irish team are set to play their initial fixture at the Dublin Arena and the Scottish team would follow suit at the national stadium of Scotland.
All four host countries’ teams will take part in the preliminary stage; two automatic spots will be reserved for any that miss out on Euro 2028 through that route.
Stadiums and Elimination Phase
Aston Villa’s stadium and Tottenham Hotspur Stadium round out the nine tournament locations. Every stadium will hold at least one knockout match, with the quarterfinal matches staged at each country’s national stadium.
The qualification draw will be conducted in the Northern Irish capital, which was excluded as a venue city last year when it was revealed Casement Park could not be renovated in time, on December 6, 2026.
Official Statement
“The event will be a competition for the supporters and a celebration of everything we love about the football – its emotion and capacity to foster unity.”
In excess of three million passes, a all-time high for a men’s European Championship, are expected to be offered to attendees.
