Cameroonian Opposition Figure Faces Legal Proceedings Over Electoral Turmoil, Government Declares

Political Demonstration in Cameroon
Numerous in Cameroon show outrage that the president has won an eighth consecutive term

The nation's Minister of the Interior the interior minister has stated that political opponent Tchiroma Bakary will be prosecuted over claims that he incited "violent post-election demonstrations".

A minimum of 4 protesters have been fatally wounded during skirmishes between law enforcement and demonstrators since the electoral process on 12 October, with the 92-year-old head of state obtaining an eighth term in office.

Issa Tchiroma asserts that he won the election, a claim rejected by the incumbent party, the CPDM.

Forceful measures by law enforcement on protesters have worried the global community, with the UN, African Union and EU demanding restraint.

Minister's Accusations

Earlier this week, the interior minister alleged Tchiroma Bakary of organising what he referred to as "unauthorized" demonstrations leading to the fatalities, and also criticised him for announcing success in the electoral contest.

He further stated that the opposition leader's "accomplices involved in an insurrectionary plan" will also face legal action.

Poll Figures

Paul Biya, who assumed office in 1982 and is now the oldest serving president, won the October 12 presidential election with over half of the vote, compared to a significant minority for his opponent, according to the constitutional court.

Challenger's Position

The opposition figure is yet to respond to the official announcement to try him, but he had previously stated that he refused to acknowledge a rigged election - and that he was fearless of being detained.

When results were announced, he said that security forces opened fire on demonstrators assembled near his residence in the city of Garoua, killing at least 2 individuals.

Inquiry Announced

Recently, the government official announced that an probe would be initiated into violent incidents prior to and following the publication of the poll figures.

"Throughout the violence, some of the individuals involved lost their lives," he said, without offering a precise figure of demonstrators who have been lost their lives in the incidents.

The minister further mentioned that several members of the law enforcement also suffered significant wounds.

Current Situation

Although the interior minister asserted the condition throughout Cameroon was now stable, demonstrators are still demonstrating in various areas of the nation, especially in these two cities, where demonstrators mounted roadblocks on Tuesday, and set fire to rubber on the thoroughfares.

Analysts alert that the election-related unrest could lead the country into a leadership vacuum.
