A tragic train derailment in the southern state of Oaxaca has resulted in the deaths of at least 13 people, an incident likely to revive opposition criticisms regarding the rapidity and management of the country's flagship public works projects.
The disaster occurred on the trans-isthmus railway, a route developed to connect the Atlantic and Pacific Ocean across the thinnest stretch of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec. This initiative was created to establish an competing rail corridor to the Panama Canal, intended to promote regional growth in the area.
“We shall rigorously clarify what caused this accident,” declared the country's president.
The official reported that, of the approximately 250 individuals on board, another 98 were wounded, with five of those in grave condition. The leader added plans to visit Oaxaca to confer with those affected.
Major Initiative of Past Leadership
The Interoceanic Train was a central infrastructure project of the immediate past president, whose time in office finished the previous year. This venture was closely associated with his leadership's developmental vision for the southern region.
Another massive rail project from that period, a passenger and freight circuit around the Yucatán Peninsula, was also integral to the wider plan to revitalize the economic fortunes of a comparatively disadvantaged part of the country.
Building Management and Risks Apprehensions
The building of both rail lines was supervised by the army, marking a notable increase of its role in national infrastructure. They were built at an accelerated rate, surpassing predictions to be at least partly launched before the end of that government.
However, this fast-paced schedule had also raised significant questions over construction quality.
- Sunday's accident was the third event on the Interoceanic Train in the current year.
- This encompasses an prior crash this month when a train struck a truck at a railroad crossing.
- The other major rail project has also experienced a couple of non-fatal derailments.
Calls for Investigation and Halt
In the wake of the tragedy, the chief of a major opposition party called for an immediate halt in the development and management of all similar projects.
This stoppage was proposed until the completion of a comprehensive safety audit. The party declared that the situation "requires prompt explanations."
In reaction, the president insisted that the train had been running in total accordance with all operational standards. Commitments were given that the government would be "diligent" in both the construction and management of these strategic undertakings.
