Tipped in Australian conditions but recorded just the fourth duck in both innings from an England top-order batsman in just 11 balls.
Duckett – Five
Made starts in both innings. The way he got out on Saturday marked the point when it began to unravel for the English side.
Ollie Pope – 6
Appears improved for adjustments to his technique. Opening match of a series tends to be his best, then it goes downhill. England require him to build on this.
Root – 1
Far off his maiden century on Australian soil. The side require the nous from their star performer if they are to come back from this defeat.
Brook – Five
His fifty in the first innings was skittish, but valuable. Awful choice in the follow-on.
Ben Stokes – 6
Came back from injury to take a five-wicket haul, but looked short of rhythm when batting. Struggled in the field against Head's aggressive batting.
Smith – 4
Could have the skills for Australia, but needs to improve. Can expect plenty of short bowling from now on.
Atkinson – Five
Part of the strong English first-innings bowling effort and tried to contribute while batting in the second innings. Part of the bowlers that fell apart on Saturday evening.
Brydon Carse – Five
Similar to the previous, with added mustard of being dominated by Head.
Archer – Five
Looked impressive while bowling in the first innings and proved the best among struggling teammates later. Might yet have an impact on the series.
Wood – 5
Went without a wicket, but massively impressive to even take part given his time away.
Australia Individual Ratings
Weatherald – Six
First-timer had tough luck to face to Jofra Archer in the first innings, then contributed in the sensational pursuit of runs.
Khawaja – 3
A bizarre Test. Appeared fit and spent periods off the pitch. Took several important catches in the slips, but also looked slow in the cordon. Earns a point due to his injury that allowed Travis Head to bat as opener.
Marnus Labuschagne – 7
A successful comeback to the side. Handled England's pressure more effectively than others initially, and backed up Head in the second.
Smith – 5
Seemed off form in the first innings. Needless before the game attack on Monty Panesar.
Head – 9
Possibly churlish not to get a perfect score, however he played a rather poor stroke in the first innings. His second-innings century was an all-time great innings.
Cameron Green – 5
Took the key wicket of Ollie Pope in the first innings. Rattled by one Wood bouncer when he batted. Barely required in the second half.
Carey – 5
Attempted an aggressive response against England's bowlers early in the match. Neat behind the stumps.
Mitchell Starc – 9
Shouldered the weight of the bowling without Pat Cummins and Hazlewood with the first Australian Ashes 10-wicket haul for two decades.
Boland – Six
Below his best initially. Got better later to trigger the English batting collapse.
Brendan Doggett – 6
Steady debut. More than able stand-in for Cummins and Hazlewood.
Lyon – 2
Almost an onlooker during a game controlled by fast bowling. Possibly picked up an injury when struck by Wood.
